Presenting the grim picture of the education sector in the state, Government High School Poru Kalnag in zone Bidder of district Anantnag craves for basic infrastructure including classrooms and toilets. The school is running in an old type of rented building which is having so many cracks on it.
Established in 1961 as primary school, upgraded as middle school in 2008 which later on upgraded as High School in 2012 . There is another school merged with the said school in 2014. The school continues to function from rented accommodation with just 8 rooms in which one room is meant for School office and another one for Mid day meals. There are 136 students reading in this school from class UKG to 10th standard.
The condition of classrooms in the old and dilapidated building is too unhygienic to be used for accommodation of the children. The mud plastered walls of the classrooms have suffered cracks while the unhygienic floor of classrooms is breeding germs and insects. The school also doesn’t have Separate toilets, there is only one toilet which is being used both by girls and boys and even by the school staff. There is no water facility to the school.
Locals rued that the top authorities of the education department have failed to construct the building for the school despite many times requested by the locals. Locals said they always highlight this issue with administration but it seems no one is caring, said locals
“It is the 63 year old school in the village. Despite our repeated representations to the authorities in last several years to sanction the building for the school, nothing has been done,” locals complained.
A local resident whose kid studies in the school said that besides locals, some teachers posted in the school also have been knocking the doors of the top authorities of the education and district admin with the plea to sanction the building for the school but they too are now disappointed.
School teachers said that situation force students to attend the classes under open sky which is not conducive to effective learning. Additionally, overcrowding in classrooms, where multiple classes are held in one room, hampers the students ability to understand what they are being taught, teachers further stated.
