Sumbal,17 April: The construction of a crucial footbridge over the Jhelum River in the Sumbal Sonawari area of Bandipora district, has been languishing for over 12 years. The project, initiated in 2012 to connect several areas, is likely to face further delays due to the need for fresh tenders.
Locals have expressed frustration over the stalled project, which has caused significant inconvenience. They blame both authorities and contractors for the delays.Despite being designated a “priority project,” construction has stalled for years.
The absence of the bridge has severely impacted residents, who are forced to rely on boats for transportation across the river. This mode of travel is not only inconvenient but also unavailable at all times.
Speaking to media Traders Federation President Sumbal and Sonawari Citizens Council Chairman Nazir Ahmad Rashi said that the people of Sumbal area facing immense hardships for the past 12 years due to the incomplete construction of a vital footbridge over the Jhelum River.
The unfinished bridge has forced locals, particularly students, to take risky boat rides across the river to reach their schools, workplaces and to connect with main market.
This poses a constant threat to their lives, especially during bad weather conditions. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, the construction of the bridge remains in limbo.
He further said people are forced to take overcrowded fishing boats to cross the river, which carries the risk of accidents.
Despite assurances from officials that the project would resume after addressing bureaucratic hurdles, there has been no progress.
The lack of action by the administration to blacklist the contractor and restart the project has further frustrated residents. This delay in construction has significantly impacted the daily lives of the people in the area.
Locals are now demanding immediate intervention from the government to complete the project at the earliest and ensure their safety.(CNI) Current News of India
