A Visionary Call for Unity: Proposal for Formation of a Kashmiri Pandit Assembly in Exile

Despite being in exile for more than three and a half decades, the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community continues to remain unheard and neglected. Our genuine grievances, justified demands, and logical aspirations are constantly sidelined by the government and political parties. Each time we raise our voice, the response we receive is disheartening and evasive, the excuse being that our community is divided and speaking in multiple, often conflicting, voices.

It is indeed a painful reality that we, the exiled sons and daughters of Kashmir, are today fragmented into various groups and organizations. Instead of listening to each other and working in coordination, many function in isolation, some in subtle rivalry, and a few in quiet opposition to one another.

This fragmentation, division and disunity is weakening our cause and providing a convenient alibi for authorities to disengage from our concerns. The government often claims it does not know whom to talk to, or whom to trust, because we lack a collective representation and a singular voice.

In light of this disturbing scenario, I, along with my organization, the Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC), strongly propose the formation of a “Kashmiri Pandit Assembly in Exile.” This Assembly should serve as the highest deliberative body of our community in exile. It must be composed of representatives from all credible KP organizations, senior citizens, intellectuals, women, youth, and independent voices who hold the community’s interest above individual ambitions.

This Assembly will elect its Chairman and Deputy Chairman, democratically from among its members and will function under a clearly defined constitution, rules, and procedures. It should meet for two or three days each month, or as mutually agreed by the members and shall have the authority to review and amend its functioning from time to time based on the evolving needs of the community.

Most importantly, the Assembly shall be backed by a set of specialized committees dealing with crucial issues such as relief and rehabilitation, return and resettlement, youth affairs, education, women’s welfare, cultural and religious matters, legal rights, and outreach. Each committee will comprise competent and committed members of the KP Assembly and will ensure focused work in its respective domain.

Such a structure will not only bring administrative discipline and clarity but will also curb growing disorder and unhealthy trends within the community. It will help us streamline our internal functioning, resolve disputes amicably, and promote healthy dialogue over division. This initiative will empower the community with a unified voice that no government or political party will be able to ignore. No longer will we have to wander in the corridors of administration, pleading for our rights. Rather, the system will be compelled to come to us, to listen to us, and to act upon our collective resolutions.

It is important to note that the existing KP organizations can and must continue to function as usual, working sincerely for the welfare of the community in their respective spheres. At the same time, they must also play a constructive role in supporting, strengthening, and cooperating with the proposed KP Assembly in Exile. These organizations should serve as the backbone of the Assembly, pushing it towards more and more collective decision-making and greater accountability. In this way, we can evolve a harmonious system where every group contributes meaningfully to a united and powerful platform for the entire community.

This is not just an idea, it is a necessary roadmap. If implemented with sincerity and vision, this Assembly can give a new and dignified shape to our exiled community. It will unite us, uplift us, and create a structured and respected platform through which we can define our destiny.

Let us rise above our egos and differences. Let us walk together in the direction of unity, self-respect, and collective strength. The time has come to write history not remain helpless victims of it. This is the way forward for our future and for the generations yet to come.
Awaiting for your positive response please.
