Srinagar, cni: Senior Awami Itihaad Party leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad on Saturday launched a sharp attack on PDP president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of hypocrisy on the issue of Kashmiri prisoners.

Sheikh Khursheed said that during Mehbooba Mufti’s tenure in power with the BJP, the plight of Kashmiri prisoners was completely ignored. He alleged that instead of addressing injustices, her government oversaw large scale use of the Public Safety Act to appease its alliance partner. He said she turned a blind eye to the suffering of people and prioritised staying in the BJP’s good books.

Drawing a comparison, the AIP leader said Mehbooba Mufti should have taken inspiration from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who, he said, stood her ground and spoke firmly for people’s rights. He alleged that in contrast, Kashmir was pushed to the background to fulfil personal and family ambitions, including securing a cabinet position for her brother.

Criticising Mehbooba Mufti’s recent remarks, Sheikh Khursheed said her current stance does not reflect a genuine demand for justice. He said she is merely seeking the shifting of prisoners from one jail to another rather than their release, calling it a disturbing display of insensitivity. He added that changing jails does not amount to justice and that her earlier silence followed by symbolic statements exposes her real intent.

He said the people of Kashmir have not forgotten this record and will not be misled by selective outrage. Sheikh Khursheed reiterated that the Awami Itihaad Party will continue to raise the issue of prisoners consistently and without compromise. Cni
