J&K Assembly Adjourned After LG Address, Speaker Made Obituary References to Former Legislators

Malik Gh nabi Cni jammu, (cni): The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday was adjourned for the day after paying homage to two senior political figures who passed away recently. As per news agency cni, The Budget Session began with the address of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, after which Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather made obituary references to former MLA Ghulam Mohammad Khan of Baramulla, who passed away at the age of 82, and former MLC Khawaja Ghulam Mohammad Lone of Budgam, who died at the age of 100.The Speaker recalled the contributions of the two veteran leaders, who breathed their last in November and December last year respectively. Members of the House observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect before the proceedings were adjourned for the day.Notably, only the Speaker spoke during the obituary reference, marking a departure from earlier practice. Explaining the change, Rather said the Business Advisory Committee had decided to follow established parliamentary norms, a proposal suggested by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the previous session.“In Parliament, obituary references for former members are made only by the Speaker, while other members do not participate. In the case of a sitting member’s demise, the entire House is allowed to speak and the House is adjourned. This is the accepted parliamentary convention,” he said. Cni
