A day after a truck driver was shot dead by Army personnel in Sopore, widespread condemnation has poured in from political leaders, civil society groups, and the victim’s

family, who have called the incident an avoidable tragedy. The driver, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, was killed after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint, prompting soldiers to open fire.Eyewitnesses and local

residents argue that the response was excessive and unnecessary, questioning why non-lethal measures were not used to halt the vehicle.

“A more cautious approach could have prevented this tragic loss of life,” said a local activist, criticizing what he termed a “trigger-happy” mindset in handling such situations.

The incident has reignited debates about the use of force and standard operating procedures followed by security forces in civilian areas.Several political parties have condemned the killing, demanding accountability and a transparent investigation. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed the shooting “deeply troubling” and called for a

judicial probe to establish the circumstances leading to the firing. “Security forces must exercise restraint. Shooting to kill cannot be the first response,” he said in a statement. PDP President Mehbooba Mufti also expressed

outrage, stating that such incidents only deepen alienation and mistrust. The Army, in an initial statement, maintained that the driver did not comply with repeated stop signals, leading to suspicion and an eventual response.

However, officials have assured that an internal inquiry will be conducted to ascertain whether the standard operating procedures were followed. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case, and further investigations are underway.

The killing has triggered protests in parts of Sopore, with locals demanding justice and action against those responsible.

The situation remains tense, with additional security personnel deployed to prevent any escalation. The incident has once again underscored the need for greater accountability and a shift towards de-escalation tactics to prevent avoidable civilian casualties in conflict-prone areas. (CNI)
