In September 2021, a head constable with the Delhi Police is accused of strangling a former coworker he had been stalking for several months, burying her body in a swamp, and then using her voicemails for the following 18 months to trick her family into believing she was still alive while weaving a complex web of lies and deceit to keep them off his back.

After tenacious attempts by the woman’s sister, he was able to maintain this façade for almost two years until the walls started to close in on him in September of this year. Surender Singh Rana, 42, was eventually taken into custody by police, who also learned that Monika Yadav, 27, had passed away two years prior.

“We have recovered the remains of the victim’s body and sent them for DNA checks. Rana did everything he could to trick the family and us. But we will be able to build a watertight case against him,” said Ravindra Yadav, special commissioner of Delhi Police’s crime branch.

Last Monday, Rana guided authorities to a marshy wetland in Alipur, a neighbourhood outside of Delhi, where he claimed to have buried Yadav’s body. Police there found bones that they believe belonged to Yadav.
