Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has raised serious concerns about the growing issues in India’s pension system, saying that it urgently needs better coordination and major reforms.

Speaking at the first-ever National Workshop on Pension Litigation in New Delhi, Dr. Singh pointed out that India now has more than 60 lakh pensioners, which is more than the number of serving central government employees. He stressed that the rising number of legal cases around pensions is putting pressure on both the system and government finances.

“These senior citizens may have retired from service, but not from serving the nation,” he said, adding that no pensioner should be forced to fight long legal battles for their rightful dues.

Currently, there are over 300 pension-related legal cases pending, and most of them (around 70%) are in the Central Administrative Tribunals (CAT). Dr. Singh explained that many of these disputes happen due to misunderstanding of rules or delayed grievance redressal, and called for a more human approach in administration.

To solve this growing issue, the workshop focused on:

  • Training nodal officers
  • Using AI-based dashboards for tracking pension cases
  • Better coordination with legal departments
  • And improving how quickly and efficiently complaints are handled

But Dr. Singh made it clear: “AI can help, but real compassion and sensitivity matter more when it comes to our senior citizens.”

He also launched several initiatives to support pensioners:

  • A Compendium of Case Studies on pension disputes
  • A Flyer and Booklet to raise awareness on pension rights
  • And Special Campaign 2.0, a month-long drive to clear pending cases of family and super senior pensioners

India’s Attorney General R. Venkataramani also joined the event virtually. He proposed a bold goal: zero pension litigation by 2028. He called for faster resolutions, better accountability, and even suggested using mediation instead of court fights.

“Let’s make sure our retirees don’t spend their golden years in legal battles,” he said. “They deserve peace, not paperwork.”

This national push aims to bring relief, respect, and justice to millions of pensioners — the people who served the country and now deserve to live with dignity.
