ECI to visit J&K tomorrow to review preparations for Lok Sabha elections

The possibility of simultaneous holding of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections is also under consideration: Officials*

 

Srinagar, March 11: (CNI) The Election Commission of India is visiting Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday and Wednesday to review preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

 

Officials said that the entire team of the commission is scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, but some officials may visit the region today.

 

“They will review the preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections during their 2-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from the election preparations, the team will also review the security situation in the Union Territory,” he said.

 

He said that the ECI team will also meet officials and representatives of political parties during their visit.

 

“The possibility of holding the assembly polls simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls is also under consideration as top officials of security and intelligence agencies have already held closed-door meetings with the ECI on the possibility of holding the polls simultaneously,” he said. Officials said.

 

He also said that soon after wrapping up his Jammu and Kashmir, the ECI will announce the schedule for the Lok Sabha polls during a press conference in New Delhi on March 15.(CNI)

 

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held sometime between April and May this year.

 

Regarding the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court in December last year upheld the abrogation of Article 370 and directed the Center to hold elections in the Union Territory by September this year.CNI
