Jammu, cni Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Kavinder Gupta, today joined people of Ward No. 20 in Gandhi Nagar Constituency in listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat, which paid tribute to the indomitable spirit of democracy and condemned the dark days of the Emergency imposed in 1975.
Speaking on the occasion, Kavinder termed the Prime Minister’s address as “a powerful reminder of the resilience of India’s democratic soul” and lauded PM Modi for highlighting the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas — a day to remember the brutal assault on the Constitution, press freedom, and civil liberties.
“PM Modi’s reflections today were not just historic but deeply inspiring. His emphasis on remembering the sacrifices of those who bravely resisted the draconian Emergency is a call for every Indian to remain vigilant and uphold the Constitution in its true spirit,” he said.
During the radio address, PM Modi played rare archival audio clips of former Prime Ministers Morarji Desai, Babu Jagjivan Ram, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had described the Emergency as a time of constitutional murder and mass repression. Reacting to these segments, Kavinder stated, “It was chilling to hear Morarji Desai describe how basic freedoms were snatched, the judiciary was muzzled, and over one lakh citizens were jailed arbitrarily under MISA. This was a dictatorship in disguise, and we must never forget it.”
The senior BJP leader further said that the voices of veteran leaders like Babu Jagjivan Ram and Vajpayee Ji serve as a guiding light for the nation. “Their courage during one of the darkest chapters in our history is an inspiration for every citizen, especially the youth, to value and defend democracy at all costs,” he added.
Kavinder reiterated that the party stands committed to safeguarding democratic values and ensuring such a constitutional assault is never repeated. “The spirit of resistance and the eventual triumph of the people remind us that no matter how powerful the oppressor, the will of the people always prevails,” he said.
The former deputy Chief Minister urged citizens, especially the younger generation, to listen to this episode of Mann Ki Baat and understand the significance of the freedoms they enjoy today, which were earned through struggle and sacrifice. Cni
