Government Degree College (GDC) Reasi celebrated the auspicious festival of Basant Panchami with great enthusiasm and rich cultural spirit under the able guidance of the Principal, Prof. Mamta Gupta. The programme was organised by the Department of Music, headed by Dr. Manisha Rani Khajuria, and witnessed active participation from faculty members, students, and staff.
Basant Panchami, which marks the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, and arts, was observed with traditional rituals and vibrant cultural activities. The celebration commenced with Saraswati Vandana and Puja, where the college fraternity sought divine blessings for wisdom and academic excellence. The campus was beautifully adorned in shades of yellow, symbolising prosperity, energy, and renewal, in accordance with the traditional significance of the day.
Students showcased their talents through a variety of cultural performances, including classical music, poetry recitations, and devotional songs. Many students and faculty members were seen wearing yellow attire, adding colour and vibrancy to the festive atmosphere and reflecting the true spirit of Basant Panchami.
Addressing the gathering, Principal Prof. Mamta Gupta highlighted the importance of such celebrations, stating that Basant Panchami reminds us of the value of knowledge, creativity, and lifelong learning. She emphasized that cultural programmes play a vital role in connecting students with India’s rich heritage while fostering unity and joy on campus.
The entire programme was meticulously organised under the guidance of Prof. Ravikant Sharma, HOD Physics and Staff Secretary; Prof. Kewal Krishan, HOD Mathematics; Dr. Irfan, HOD Urdu; and Dr. Radhika Rasyal, HOD History. The event concluded with the distribution of Prasad and a message underscoring the values of learning, discipline, and harmony.
On the same occasion, GDC Reasi also organised a plantation drive as part of the Vandematram @150 initiative, coinciding with Basant Panchami, which marks the onset of Vasant Ritu (spring season). The plantation drive involved planting rose cuttings in already prepared and demarcated flower beds within the campus.
The plantation drive was organised by the NSS Unit under the patronage of Principal Prof. Mamta Gupta, with active coordination from senior faculty members Prof. Ravikant Sharma, Dr. Satish Kumar, Prof. Baldev Singh (NSS Programme Officer), and Prof. Anju Devi (ANO NCC).
Both the cultural celebration and the plantation drive enriched the academic and cultural environment of the college, inspiring students to value knowledge, tradition, and environmental responsibility with dedication and enthusiasm. Cni
