External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India and China have made good progress in fixing their ties over the past nine months, but it’s time to take the next big step focus on peace at the border and avoid unfair trade moves.

During his latest talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Jaishankar said both countries should stop adding trade restrictions and roadblocks, hinting at China’s recent export controls on key minerals. He also stressed the urgent need to calm down tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Speaking about the bigger picture, Jaishankar said India and China need to think long-term and act wisely to manage their complex relationship. He urged for open, honest conversations to solve tough issues and build trust.

He highlighted that relations have started improving since the October 2024 meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan. “Our ties have been on a positive path since then,” Jaishankar said during his meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, adding that he hopes this visit will keep that momentum going.

Jaishankar also pointed out how regular diplomatic efforts can lead to results that benefit both sides. He mentioned the recent restart of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which has been welcomed by people in India.

India and China have been slowly fixing their strained ties ever since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. As the two countries now mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, Jaishankar called for stronger cooperation and continued peace efforts.
