Gurez, cni:In a significant initiative to promote winter tourism and generate livelihood opportunities in snowbound border areas, the Indian Army’s Rana Battalion organised a skiing training camp at the high-altitude region of Bagtore near the Line of Control in the Gurez sector of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Gurez Valley, renowned for its stunning natural beauty, has already established itself as a popular summer tourism destination, drawing a large number of visitors from across the country. However, with the onset of winter and heavy snowfall, economic activity in the region often comes to a halt. Keeping this seasonal challenge in mind, the Indian Army has stepped forward with a proactive approach to encourage winter tourism by training local residents in skiing and allied winter sports.
The skiing camp was designed to equip local youth with practical skills, enabling them to earn a sustainable livelihood during the winter months. Trained participants can explore opportunities as ski guides, instructors, or support staff for tourists visiting the valley during the snow season. Beyond skill development, the initiative also aims to project Gurez as a safe and attractive winter destination, despite its sensitive location along the border.
Local residents have welcomed the Army’s effort, expressing hope that such initiatives will open new avenues of employment and reduce dependence on seasonal income. The program has also strengthened the bond between the Army and the local population, highlighting a shared commitment to development and self-reliance in this remote region.
With continued support and similar initiatives in the future, Gurez Valley holds the potential to emerge as a year-round tourism destination, bringing long-term economic benefits to its people while showcasing the region’s unique winter charm. Cni
