In a significant move, the J&K Government has granted enhanced powers to Divisional Commissioners and Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) in the Kashmir and Jammu Zones under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The order, issued by Financial Commissioners (Additional Chief Secretary) Home RK Goyal, specifies that the powers conferred by the UT under Sections 7 and 8 of the UAPA will now be wielded by IGPs and Divisional Commissioners, respectively, within their territorial jurisdictions. This decision, with the approval of the Central Government conveyed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, marks a strategic shift in the administration’s approach to ensure the effective implementation of UAPA provisions in the region.
