Wandhama Massacre Day: A Black Night That Still Bleeds the Conscience of the Nation,KP community pays tributes & demands High level Deep investigation—– Sevak Kundan Kashmiri, President KPC
Today is Wandhama Massacre Day, a day that brings unbearable pain, grief, anger, and a deep sense of betrayal to every Kashmiri Pandit and to every Indian who still believes in justice and humanity. On the dark and cursed night of 25 January 1998, when the entire nation was preparing to celebrate Republic Day, and when the Muslim community was observing the sacred night of Shab-e-Qader, a night meant for prayers, forgiveness, and peace, the enemies of humanity chose to spill innocent blood in the Kashmiri Pandit village of Wandhama in Ganderbal.
That night, heavily armed Pak-sponsored terrorists, aided by local sympathizers, entered the homes of defenseless Kashmiri Pandit families. What followed was not violence born out of conflict, but a calculated and cold-blooded communal massacre. Twenty-three innocent Kashmiri Pandits were brutally killed at point-blank range. Old and frail men, elderly women, young mothers, and small children were mercilessly shot inside their own homes. Entire families were wiped out within minutes. There was no provocation, no resistance, no escape only terror, screams, and death. Even the sanctity of a religious night and the dignity of a national festival could not restrain the killers. This barbarity proved beyond doubt that the perpetrators had neither faith nor fear of God, only hatred and genocidal intent.
The pain of Wandhama did not end with that night. It has continued for twenty-seven long years, aggravated by the shameful apathy and indifference of the State. Till date, there has been no honest and time-bound investigation, no credible Commission of Enquiry, and no serious effort to bring the terrorists, their local collaborators, conspirators, guides, and financiers to justice. Not a single mastermind has been punished. Not a single facilitator has been exposed. Files gathered dust, and the blood of the innocent was allowed to dry without accountability.
The treatment of the victim families has been equally humiliating. The so-called compensation offered was insultingly inadequate, as if human lives, shattered families, and orphaned children could be reduced to a few rupees. There was no comprehensive rehabilitation, no sustained support, and no assurance of justice. Widows were left to mourn alone, children grew up with trauma and fear, and survivors were forced into silence and exile while the killers enjoyed freedom and protection.
On this solemn day, the entire Kashmiri Pandit community, cutting across regions and generations, pays rich and heartfelt tributes to the martyrs of Wandhama., strongly demands for highevel probe and deep investigation to know about truth of this massacre.
The Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC) allied organ of ASKPC underlining its unwavering commitment to truth and justice, bows its head in reverence to the innocent souls who were massacred. The Yakhunt Mandli Ashram (YMA), along with other social, religious, and community organizations, joins in collective remembrance, prayer, and resolve, reaffirming that the sacrifices of Wandhama will never be forgotten and will never be reduced to footnotes of history.
Today, it must be said clearly and without fear that a curse rests upon the terrorists who committed this crime, upon their sympathizers who sheltered them, upon their financiers who funded genocide, and upon those political and administrative elements who looked the other way. A stronger curse rests upon a system that failed its own citizens, that normalized the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits, and that treated their genocide as an inconvenient chapter of history.
Wandhama is not merely a tragedy of the past. It is a living reminder of institutional failure, political cowardice, and moral collapse. It is an open wound on the conscience of the Republic of India. Until the truth is officially acknowledged, until the perpetrators are punished, and until justice is delivered with dignity to the victim families, the soul of the nation will remain stained.
We do not observe this day for ritual mourning. We observe it as a solemn pledge to remember, to speak, and to demand justice. The Kashmiri Pandits of Wandhama were innocent. Their only identity was their faith and their roots. Their blood demands truth, accountability, repentance, and justice. Silence is no longer acceptable. Forgetting is a crime. Wandhama will be remembered, the martyrs will be honored, and history will record who stood for justice and who chose silence in the face of genocide.
