Jammu : PM Modi Ji and Hounrable SupremeCourt should revisit his decision of conducting elections and restoring statehood soon in Jammu and Kashmir, as it would be a decision and step in hurry — Kundan Kashmiri, President KPC
The recent announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the conduct of elections and the restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir has sparked some reactions, particularly from nationalist forces like the Kashmiri Pandit community and its representative organization, the Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC).This step can not be step towards normalization, but provide space to those forces and politicians who were responsible for the destruction of Jammu and Kashmir.
Kundan Kashmiri, President of KPC, voices apprehensions, citing historical grievances and the failure of previous Kashmir-centric politicians to address development issues while exacerbating tensions. He highlights the pervasive corruption, nepotism, and sympathy towards anti-national elements that have plagued the region for decades, leading to its notorious reputation as one of the most corrupt states in the country.
The KPC emphasizes the need for continued central governance and the maintenance of Union Territory status in Jammu and Kashmir. They advocate for sustained efforts to eradicate terrorism, root out corruption, and instill confidence among minorities, particularly the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community.
Additionally, they call for accountability measures against politicians who have exploited their positions for personal gain and for attracting investments to spur economic growth.
Crucially, the KPC stresses the unresolved issues affecting the Kashmiri Pandit community, such as the establishment of a single settlement for displaced individuals in their ancestral land, as well as the acknowledgment and investigation of past atrocities through a judicial inquiry. They also seek recognition of the indigenous status of the Kashmiri Pandits and demand justice for the victims of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
In light of these concerns, the KPC urges Prime Minister Modi to refrain from rushing into elections and the restoration of statehood. They caution against repeating the mistakes of the past, particularly the hasty decisions that led to the imposition of Article 370 by the Nehru-led Congress government. Instead, they advocate for a cautious and inclusive approach that addresses the grievances of all stakeholders, particularly the minority communities.
Furthermore, the KPC appeals to Prime Minister Modi to engage in meaningful dialogue with representatives of the Kashmiri Pandit community to understand their concerns and demands better. They stress the importance of incorporating these voices into any decision-making process concerning the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
In conclusion, the KPC’s stance underscores the complexity of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the need for a nuanced and deliberate approach. By prioritizing accountability, inclusivity, and justice, they believe that lasting peace and prosperity can be achieved in the region. Prime Minister Modi’s government is urged to heed these concerns and engage in constructive dialogue to chart a path forward that respects the aspirations of all communities in Jammu and Kashmir.
