The Other Backward Classes (OBCs) are reportedly considering receiving reservation in Panchayat and Municipalities, similar to other States and UTs across the nation, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to order Summary Revision of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir for Parliamentary and Assembly voters with January 1, 2024 as a cutoff date and publication of final rolls on January 5.
Another significant disparity has been found in several ULB Wards, particularly the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), where it has been noted that a small number of Wards had roughly four times the number of electors as the others.
According to various reports, the Government is considering offering OBCs, along with women, SCs, and STs, a reservation in Jammu and Kashmir’s panchayat and urban local body elections based on their demographics.
In municipalities and panchayats, women now enjoy a 33 percent reserve, while SCs and STs now get a quota based on their population. SC and ST women have also been accorded reservations within these groups.
