Srinagar, July 8: Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Monday that tourism in Kashmir is picking up again after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. He credited the revival to the strong and coordinated efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the central government in restoring public confidence.
Speaking to reporters during the Tourism Conclave in Srinagar, the minister said that while the Pahalgam incident had caused a slowdown, things are now improving. He praised the way the Union Territory administration stepped up, supported by central government visits and ministerial outreach, calling it a key part of a successful confidence-building campaign.
Shekhawat said that these efforts are already showing results and will help bring Kashmir’s tourism sector back to the pace it had reached over the last three years. He added that during his earlier visit in June, he made it clear that Kashmir remains safe and urged people not to let a single incident affect the region’s image.
The minister said the conclave in Srinagar was organised to send two important messages. First, to let tourism officials from across the country take back a message of safety and revival to their states, encouraging more domestic tourism to Kashmir. Second, to support the Prime Minister’s goal of developing 50 iconic destinations across India that meet global standards.
He explained that the conclave was also a platform to share ideas and experiences among tourism professionals. The goal is to improve the overall travel experience by upgrading infrastructure, services, and hospitality not just in Kashmir but across India.
Shekhawat said it’s time to think in new ways and work together to ensure that tourists coming to Kashmir feel welcomed, safe, and inspired to return.
