Washington : US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to countries backing the BRICS alliance, saying they could face an extra 10 percent tariff if they support what he called “anti-American” policies.

Trump’s statement came after the BRICS group — which includes major global economies — criticized rising trade tariffs, although they did not mention Trump directly. Leaders from the BRICS countries are currently meeting in Brazil for their 17th summit.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, “Any country aligning themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an additional 10 percent tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

BRICS, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in 2024 by adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia also officially joined the bloc in 2025, making it a powerful coalition with growing global influence.

In another post, Trump said the US will begin sending out official letters and tariff notices to several countries starting Monday. “I am pleased to announce that the United States tariff letters and/or deals with various countries from around the world will be delivered starting 12:00 PM Eastern, Monday, July 7th,” he wrote.

Trump’s tough stance comes amid rising tensions over global trade policies and the growing influence of BRICS, which some see as a challenge to Western economic leadership.
