Srinagar : Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura today marked National Doctors’ Day with a vibrant and heartfelt ceremony recognizing the unwavering dedication of doctors and healthcare professionals. The event was graced by Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Ms. Sakeena Itoo, who paid glowing tribute to the medical community, calling them “pillars of hope” and “true warriors” of society.
Addressing a gathering of prominent healthcare professionals, students, and faculty members, Minister Itoo emphasized that doctors form the backbone of the nation’s health system and play an indispensable role in creating a resilient and healthy society. “Doctors are not just healers, they are the strength and support for countless families. Their tireless service, often under high pressure and at personal risk, commands our deepest gratitude and utmost respect,” she said.
The event witnessed participation from Director SKIMS, Dr. M.A. Ganie, former Director Dr. M.S. Khuroo, HoDs, senior doctors, researchers, and medical students. In her speech, the Minister acknowledged the vital contributions of these professionals, especially during public health emergencies. She highlighted that Doctors’ Day is not merely a celebration, but a recognition of the sacrifice and compassion shown by those in the medical field.
The Minister also commemorated Dr. B.C. Roy, in whose honour National Doctors’ Day is observed in India, describing him as a “Distinguished Physician and Statesman whose legacy continues to inspire the medical fraternity.”
She further praised the faculty and staff of SKIMS for their excellence in patient care, education, and research. Referring to SKIMS as the “vision of Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah,” she assured that the government is actively working on measures to restore the engineering wing and enhance infrastructure support for the institute.
Highlighting the transformation of healthcare priorities, Minister Itoo said, “The past few years have shown us that healthcare is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right. Our doctors are not optional; they are essential.”
Dr. M.S. Khuroo, in his address, stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being of doctors themselves, especially as they often place patient care above their own health. He called the medical profession a blessing and a noble form of service to mankind.
Director SKIMS, Dr. M.A. Ganie, described the occasion as a tribute to “heroes in white coats” and detailed the significant achievements of the institute in providing advanced medical care and education.
In his welcome address, Dr. G.H. Yatoo, HoD Hospital Administration, reflected on the sacrifices made by doctors, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged society to recognize the contribution of healthcare providers every day, not just once a year.
Other dignitaries who addressed the gathering included Prof. Fazal Qadir, Principal SKIMS Medical College; Prof. G.M. Gulzar, Dean Medical Faculty; and Prof. G.J. Qadri, former HoD Hospital Administration.
The event also featured the distribution of promotion orders to SKIMS staff, marking a moment of appreciation and motivation for the dedicated personnel of the institute.
The celebrations concluded on a high note with renewed commitment towards supporting and strengthening the medical community in Jammu & Kashmir.(CNI)
