Srinagar, (CNI NEWS): Electricity consumers across Jammu and Kashmir are set to bear the brunt of a revised power tariff from September 1, with the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) approving an average hike of 6.83 per cent for the financial year 2026–27.

The revised tariff, approved through JERC Order No. 06 of 2026 dated August 20, will remain operative till March 31, 2027, unless subsequently modified or extended by the Commission.

Under the new structure, metered domestic consumers will be charged ₹2.45 per unit for consumption up to 200 units, ₹4.20 per unit for 201–400 units and ₹4.60 per unit beyond 400 units. The fixed charge has also been raised to ₹10 per kW per month.

While the overall tariff revision averages 6.83 per cent, the actual impact on consumers will vary according to their category, consumption pattern and sanctioned load.

The Commission has, however, preserved concessional rates for BPL households and small agricultural consumers. Eligible BPL consumers consuming up to 30 units monthly will continue to pay ₹1.40 per unit, while agricultural connections up to 20 HP will attract a subsidised rate of ₹1.05 per unit.

Commercial consumers have also been brought under the revised tariff regime, with single-phase consumers facing charges of ₹3.75 per unit up to 200 units and ₹5.70 per unit thereafter.

JERC has approved an aggregate revenue requirement of ₹10,275.72 crore for JPDCL and KPDCL, with a revenue gap of ₹2,420.78 crore to be bridged through government subsidy and grant support.

The Commission has maintained that recovering the entire revenue deficit through tariffs alone could have necessitated a substantially steeper increase, with government support helping contain the burden on consumers. CNI NEWS
