Srinagar , CNI NEWS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a major protest against the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir Government over the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
The BJP has announced a Secretariat Gherao on September 2, with the protest march scheduled to begin from Lal Chowk and proceed towards the Civil Secretariat.The party has opposed the 6.83 per cent increase in electricity tariffs, accusing the government of putting an additional financial burden on the common people.
The revised tariff is scheduled to come into effect from September 1, 2026.BJP leaders have also questioned the Omar Abdullah Government over its electoral promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to eligible households. The BJP has termed the tariff hike anti-people and demanded its immediate rollback.According to BJP leaders, the proposed protest will also raise issues including alleged backdoor appointments, corruption and administrative misgovernance.
The party has claimed that thousands of people, including party workers and representatives of various sections, are expected to participate in the Secretariat Gherao.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has defended the tariff revision, calling it a “compulsion” and maintaining that the increase was kept to the minimum possible level after a gap of four years.
