Body of Man Missing Since 22 Months Recovered from Jhelum in Srinagar

Srinagar, (cni) After a prolonged period of nearly 22 months, the mortal remains of a man who had drowned in a tragic boat capsizing incident were recovered on Monday from the River Jhelum in Srinagar.

An official told (cni) that the deceased has been identified as Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, son of Abdul Gani Sheikh, a resident of Gandbal, aged about 40 years. He had gone missing after a boat capsized in the river last year.

He also said that the body was recovered by a local sand extractor, who spotted the remains and immediately informed the authorities. Subsequently, a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Quick Response Team (QRT) Jhelum, Srinagar, rushed to the spot and retrieved the body.

The recovered body has been taken for medico-legal formalities, while police have initiated further proceedings in the matter. The recovery has brought a tragic closure to the long wait of the bereaved family.–cni
