In an important development at the United Nations, India supported a draft resolution in the General Assembly advocating for Palestine to be admitted as a full member of the organization.

The resolution received overwhelming support with 143 votes in favour, including India’s, while nine countries voted against it and 25 abstained. This move signals India’s longstanding support for Palestine, dating back to 1974 when it recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.

India’s backing of the resolution aligns with its historical stance on the issue, as it was among the first countries to recognize the State of Palestine in 1988. The resolution recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter favorably, emphasizing Palestine’s qualifications for UN membership.

Despite previous setbacks, including a recent veto by the US in the Security Council, Palestine’s application for full UN membership continues to garner international attention and support. As part of the resolution, Palestine will gain additional rights and privileges at the UN, effective from the 79th session of the General Assembly starting in September.

These include the right to participate in UN conferences, make statements on behalf of a group, and be seated among member states. While Palestine currently holds observer status and lacks voting rights, its pursuit of full membership underscores ongoing efforts to achieve international recognition and representation.
