Kokernag Gunfight Update: One body recovered, believed to be that of militant

September 17 CNI News Srinagar: Security forces recovered a body on Sunday that they believe to be a militant’s near a cave hideout in Kokernag’s Gadoole area, where an anti-militancy operation is ongoing for the fifth consecutive day.

According to multiple reports, the body appeared to be that of a militant but the identification of the deceased was not immediately confirmed.

The massive operation in the Gadoole area began on Wednesday after militants killed Army Colonel Manpreet Singh (CO 19RR), Major Ashish Dhonchak, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat while injuring two troops during an earlier encounter with a joint team of police and army. Later, one of the soldiers passed away from his injuries.

Lt. Gen. Dwivedi, the Northern Commander of the army, and other officers visited the site of the gunfight yesterday to assess the operational situation.

 Sources claim that the ground commanders briefed him about the operation, which involved the use of sophisticated tools including drones and helicopters for observation.

ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar stated earlier this week that two to three militants are trapped in the forests.  He had also asked retired army, police officers to avoid ‘Ambush Hypothesis”, stating that it was a specific input based operation that the militants will be neutralized.
