Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) has expressed deep anguish over the devastating fire incident that engulfed more than 50 shops, including restaurants, in the bustling tourist hub of Sonamarg in Ganderbal district.
KTMF President Mohammad Yaseen Khan said, “we are relieved that no casualties have been reported the loss of livelihoods, properties and investments of hardworking traders is immeasurable. The absence of adequate fire safety infrastructure in such a vital tourist destination is alarming and has resulted in irreversible damage today.
While appealing to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Khan said they should ensure that Sonamarg is equipped with a dedicated fire station to prevent such catastrophes in the future. The traders of the region cannot afford to suffer such devastating losses repeatedly due to administrative neglect.
Khan said, we demand immediate financial compensation and rehabilitation for the affected shopkeepers and restaurant owners who have lost their businesses overnight. These traders are the backbone of Sonamarg’s economy and without swift government intervention, their recovery will be exceedingly difficult. “KTMF stands in solidarity with the affected traders and will continue to advocate for their rightful support. We urge the government to act decisively and ensure that such tragedies do not recur due to infrastructural shortcomings”, Khan observed.(CNI)
