Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with senior ministers and officials to take stock of the situation following heavy downpour in parts of the country, the prime minister’s office said in a statement.
Local administrations, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are working to ensure the well-being of those affected, it added.
Over the weekend, heavy rains lashed Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and the National Capital Region, wrecking havoc and throwing normal life out of gear. Several rivers, including the Yamuna in Delhi, are in spate, while major cities in northern India have reported waterlogging issues after record rains on Sunday.
In the national capital, CM Arvind Kejriwal called for a meeting with all ministers, officers and mayor over the situation due to incessant rainfall.
As per Atul Garg of Delhi Fire Service, a total of total 13 incidents of house collapse were reported in the national capital. He also said that two people have died whereas three children were injured.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in Himachal Pradesh and an orange alert for three districts for the next 48 hours as the state continued to receive heavy rainfall. IMD has also issued alerts for flash floods, landslides in the state.
