Srinagar : Peoples Democratic Party Honors the Legacy of Journalist and Writer Sofi Ghulam Mohammad on his 14th Death Anniversary

Peoples Democratic Party commemorates the 14th death anniversary of Sofi Ghulam Mohammad, the esteemed founder-editor of the ‘Srinagar Times.’ Sofi, a distinguished journalist and prolific short story writer, left an indelible mark on the literary and journalistic landscape of Kashmir.

Sofi Ghulam Mohammad began his journalistic journey as a reporter for the Congress mouthpiece ‘Khidmat’ and later ascended to leadership roles, serving as the president of the Kashmir Press Club and the Daily Newspaper Editors Conference. In 2002, his contributions were acknowledged with a nomination for the J&K Legislative Council by then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.

Paying homage to Sofi Ghulam Mohammad, Party President Ms Mehbooba Mufti highlighted his profound impact on literature and society. She emphasized Sofi’s enduring legacy as an inspiration for generations to contribute to the betterment of society, promote the mother tongue, and uphold journalistic integrity. Ms Mehbooba Mufti also prayed for the eternal peace for Sofi’s soul.

Senior Party leaders, including Ab Rehman Veeri, Gh. Nabi lone Hanjura, Mohammad Sartaj Madni, Sofi Ab Gaffar, Asiea Naqash, Ab Qayoom Bhat, and others, joined in paying their respects to Sofi Ghulam Mohammad.

Born in Drogjan, Srinagar in 1927, Sofi’s literary journey began with Urdu writings until 1950, after which he transitioned to Kashmiri. His debut Kashmiri story, “Chunichoor,” marked the start of a prolific phase, with around 50 stories penned until 1964. Sofi’s story collections, “Shish-Ta Sangisthan” and “Lusymit Tarak,” earned him acclaim and the prestigious State Cultural Academy Award.

Sofi Ghulam Mohammad’s narratives, such as ‘Malded’ and ‘Tunz Khor,’ uniquely portrayed middle-class society, focusing on surroundings rather than individual personalities. His legacy is further illuminated by his cheerful and generous personality, as recalled by those who worked alongside him in the 1980s, a period when ‘Aftab,’ ‘Srinagar Times,’ and ‘Khidmat’ were prominent newspapers in Kashmir.

Peoples Democratic Party acknowledges Sofi Ghulam Mohammad’s enduring contribution to journalism and literature, pledging to carry forward his legacy of integrity, dedication, and respect for language and culture.(CNI) Current News of India
