Jammu, CNI: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed uproar on Monday after the Speaker disallowed an adjournment motion by the National Conference (NC) seeking a discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill-2025. Citing that the matter is sub-judice, the Speaker invoked Rule 58(7) to bar debate on the bill, which has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq questioned the Speaker’s stance, pointing out that central laws like GST were previously debated in the House. The Speaker’s ruling triggered protests from NC, PDP, and Congress members, who stormed towards the Well shouting slogans like “Waqf Bill Na Manzoor.”

Marshals prevented opposition legislators from reaching the podium, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House for 15 minutes—the first such adjournment of the current budget session.

The Waqf Bill remains a point of sharp contention in J&K, with opposition parties arguing it undermines religious and local autonomy in the Muslim-majority region. (CNI)
