The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the central government why the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir has not been restored yet and when it will be restored.
The government counsel replied that the statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be restored soon. However, they said that Ladakh will remain as UT.
According to CNI, in a major development regarding Article 370, the Supreme Court on Tuesday raised questions on the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir during its daily proceedings.
In the matter under hearing by the five-judge constitution bench, the court has asked the central government to answer what steps have been taken so far to restore the democracy in the region.
The matter was brought before a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
The court’s question about the timeline for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood has fueled discussions about ongoing changes in the region’s governance structure.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, responded to the court’s query by asserting that Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a Union Territory was ‘temporary’.
Mehta confirmed that the decision to designate it as a UT was a response to the prevailing situation at that time. He told the court that the situation was not suitable for it at the time and emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. The status is ‘not stable’ and the status of the state will be restored after the return of ‘normality’.
He further said that the government is determined to restore the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir once the situation returns to normal.
Pertinently, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were converted into two separate Union Territories.
Since the case regarding Article 370 is being heard in the Supreme Court, not only the eyes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are fixed on the Supreme Court, but the attention of the entire country is also in that direction.(CNI)
