The Supreme Court has scheduled the writ petition seeking the holding of early assembly elections in J&K for hearing on Thursday, July 6.

Harsh Dev Singh, a former minister and advocate, said that “As per the ‘cause list’ issued by the Supreme Court registry the matter will be heard by a bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India.”

In an effort to restore the democratic process in the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, Singh had filed a writ petition requesting the court for its indulgence.

He said that he was compelled to move the top court of the country in view of the uneasy, disquieting silence maintained by the Government of India and the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the issue.

According to Harsh, any delay on this matter would amount to a betrayal of democracy and a violation of the Supreme Court’s rulings.
