Srinagar, (CNI): Authorities in Srinagar have once again banned Eid prayers at the historic Jama Masjid for the fifth consecutive year, drawing condemnation from religious leaders and local communities. .
Anjuman Awqaf Jama Masjid has strongly condemned this decision and called it a violation of religious freedom and an insult to sacred traditions. Awqaf said the denial of access to mosques during important occasions of spiritual significance such as Eid has deepened feelings of alienation and grievance among believers.
Reports indicate that police personnel locked the doors of the Jamia after Fajr prayers this morning, informing the Anjuman Awqaf that Eid prayers will not be allowed at 9:30 am.
Additionally, a prominent religious leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was reportedly placed under house arrest this morning.
The ongoing ban on religious gatherings at the Jamia Masjid has been a source of controversy, highlighting tensions over religious rights and freedoms in the region.
This is the fifth year in a row that Eid prayers have not been allowed at the historic mosque since the end of JK’s special status.
A statement issued by the Awqaf said, “After the Fajr (morning) prayer today, the police personnel closed the doors of the Jamia Masjid Srinagar and informed the Awqaf that the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer will be held today at 9.30 am.” (CNI)
